Bsc: Internship Mechanical Engineering - Cyclone particle separation design

Are you a bachelor Mechanical Engineering student, looking for an internship? Do you think it's a challenge to go through the entire design cycle of a cyclone filter for a specific inkjet application? This is a nice internship for you!

Your assignment
Air filtering is often required in many technical applications, so is it in inkjet printing. There are many types of filters, where the most common one is a porous filter. On the other hand there is also a category called ‘cyclone filters’, of which an example is shown in the figure below. It is a cylinder that tapers towards the outlet and has an inlet shifted offset from the center. Its working principle is particle separation by means of centrifugal force. The largest particles are centrifuged towards the wall first, resulting in smaller particles further downstream. The main benefits of such filter is that it does not clog thus no filter replacement needed, can handle high pollution load and pressure losses are often lower than that of a porous filter. Cyclone filtration is a well-known technology and plenty of design rules are available.

During this assignment you will go through the entire design cycle of a cyclone filter for a specific inkjet application. This cycle consists of the classic V-model actions, i.e. defining/gathering requirements, creating the theoretical design, creating the 3D-drawing and finally building/assembly and validation. In the end, we expect you to provide us with a view on the technical possibilities and possible up- and downsides of using this technology over a porous filter.

What’s in it for you?
•    A challenging assignment with skilled coaching
•    Internship/ Graduation compensation of €500,- per month
•    Travel cost compensation if you don’t have an ‘OV-weekcard’
•    The possibility to network with professionals inside and outside your field of expertise, thanks to our diversity of disciplines which you will work with
