Are you a hands-on mechanical engineering student interested in thermal design and CAE? Do you like working on hands-on engineering challenges where design and physics come together? We are looking for you!
Your assignment
Within Canon Production Printing, cold air impingement (CAI) units are used to cool printed sheets that leave the drying process at elevated temperatures. Effective cooling is essential to ensure print quality and enable reliable high-speed paper transport. A new concept is currently being developed in which an innovative new technology is used to enhance heat transfer between the air and the paper surface. The fundamental working principles of this concept are understood, and the next step is to design and realize a functional demonstrator.
In this assignment, you will design a new cooling device with this new technology that can serve as a demonstrator. Ideally, this unit can be implemented as a drop-in replacement for an existing CAI module in a printer. You will focus on the thermal and mechanical design of the unit. This includes determining how heat is effectively removed from the paper and system, for example by optimizing air flow and/or evaluating the use of water cooling.
In addition, you will translate the known design rules and constraints of the technology into a practical and manufacturable mechanical layout. You will evaluate the impact of design choices on cooling performance, robustness and integration feasibility. Based on your work, you will deliver a complete design of the demonstrator unit, including key design decisions and supporting calculations. If sufficient progress is achieved, the design may be realized and tested in practice.
