Bsc: Internship Applied Physics/ Materials Science

Discover how subtle surface textures influence the visual brilliance of images!

Are you fascinated by how the tiniest surface details can change the way we see printed materials? Do you want to help improve print quality by uncovering the science behind gloss and roughness?

Your assignment
You will investigate the relationship between gloss (the shiny appearance of a surface) and surface roughness (the microscopic texture) in printed samples. Your main goal is to investigate how surface roughness affects gloss and how modifications of the print process can affect surface roughness.

Possible directions for your activities:

  • Conduct experiments using gloss meters and profilometers to collect data on various printed samples.
  • Analyse the data to identify patterns and correlations between gloss values and roughness parameters.
  • Systematically adjust print settings to evaluate their impact on surface roughness.
  • You will work within the R&D team at Canon Production Printing, collaborating with experts in materials science and print technology.

Your profile

  • You are a bachelor student in Applied Physics, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • You enjoy experimental work and data analysis.
  • You have basic experience with laboratory equipment (e.g., profilometers, gloss meters) and are comfortable with data processing (e.g., Matlab or Python).
  • You are available for a 4–6 month internship, at least 3 days per week.

What’s in it for you?

  • A challenging assignment with skilled coaching.
  • Internship/ Graduation compensation of up to €500,- per month.
  • Travel cost compensation if you don’t have an ‘OV-weekcard’.
  • The possibility to network with professionals inside and outside your field of expertise, thanks to our diversity of disciplines which you will work with.
