HBO: Internship analytical chemistry – Develop a GC-MS method for analysing very volatile compounds in air

Can a more efficient method be developed?

Are you a HBO Chemistry student which is looking for an internship? Are you in for developing a new GC method for measuring very volatile compounds, for which you will need creativity and curiosity? We are looking for you!

Your assignment One of our responsibilities at the Canon Analysis and measurements department is the analysis of compounds in air near printers. These measurements are done to make sure our printers are safe to use.
We would like to develop a new method to analyse very volatile compounds with GC-MS. Most other volatiles can already be analysed using GC-MS, but these very volatile compounds still need to be analysed using other techniques like LC for which a time consuming sample preparation is necessary.

The assignment involves:

  • Literature search for methods that can be used.
  • Find if the current sampling methods (for sampling compounds in air) can be used, or if a new sampling method is needed.
  • Develop a GC-MS method for which you can vary in the used injection technique, GC column and GC settings.
  • You will also need to develop a method to perform GC calibrations, for which several experiments will need to be performed.
  • Validate the method you have developed

You will be working with state-of the art equipment in an experienced team.

Your profile
• You are currently studying (analytical) chemistry on a HBO level
• You think it’s a challenge to develop an analytical method, and work with modern GC-MS equipment.
• To be able to fulfil the assignment you have skills such as analytical mindset, creativity and you can work accurately.
• As of 2025, you are available for 4 to 6 months for a minimum of 4 days per week

What’s in it for you?
• A challenging assignment with skilled coaching
• Internship/ Graduation compensation of €500,- per month
•Travel cost compensation if you don’t have an ‘OV-weekcard’
•The possibility to network with professionals inside and outside your field of expertise, thanks to our diversity of disciplines which you will work with.
•With our company values collaboration, innovation and ownership, we strive to bring out the best in each other, expand boundaries and feel empowered to take ownership of our work.
