Msc: Graduation Assignment Physics/Electrical - Media step prediction using physics-based AI
Date: 11 Dec 2024
Location: NL
Company: Canon Production Printing
Are you a Msc student which is looking for a graduation assignment? Are you in for the challenge to improve our print quality by automating user print inspecting using artificial intelligence? We are looking for you!
Your assignment
Canon Production Printing develops several high-end digital inkjet printer systems for the high-volume and graphic arts professional printing markets. Here, the demands on print quality are stringent, i.e., no print quality artefacts and consistent good quality prints at high speed. Print quality depends on precisely jetting ink droplets on moving media (e.g. paper), how the image is subsequently formed by interactions between droplets and the media, and finally the ink solidification process. Hence, many interacting mechanical, physical and chemical processes play a role in creating a high-quality print.
To keep the print quality at high-level, Canon Production Printing is developing a new advanced imaging sensor. This image data will be used in real-time to ensure the best print quality possible. The control loop algorithm relies on the existence of an algorithm that measures media step errors using the imaging sensor. This algorithm needs to have a 100% success rate to achieve consistent print quality.
A physical model based on varies inputs has been created that is able to predict the media steps, and deformation of the media. However, this model requires significant amounts of fit data and is very sensitive on varies aspects we do not have control over in the field, for example pollution and part wear. The goal of this project is to create a physics-based AI using the model and the media step information from the image sensor that can be used in the printer when in the field.
