Msc: Internship Mechanical Engineering - Model-based Approach to Estimate Belt Stretch

Are you an MSc student in Mechanical Engineering with an interest in precision mechanics, dynamics and mechatronic system design? Do you want to work on a challenging motion system in which accuracy, speed, stiffness and control all come together? We are looking for you! 
 

Your assignment 
In high-end printing systems, sheets are printed on using inkjet technology. The sheets are transported under the printheads by a highly accurate conveyor system. The belt has a partial vacuum that holds the substrate firmly onto the belt. To ensure print quality, the belt must move with micrometer accuracy. 

However, the belt is made from a polymer film that undergoes some deformation. This is due, among other things, to friction experienced by the belt, steering forces, and the pre-tensioning force. These deformations cause creep to occur between the sheet and the conveyor belt as it moves along the track. These ‘belt stretch’ deformations can be compensated for by a control system. 

Your assignment is to understand the factors that contribute to belt stretch. Moreover, you will create a model-based system that predicts the error induced by this phenomenon, such that the system can correct for it. 

The model should use inputs that affect the belt stretch, such as the torque of the drive torque of the belt, the media dimensions and weight, its coefficient of friction, sheet temperatures, and many more. The influence of each contributor needs to be understood and modelled properly. You will propose a suitable compensation strategy. 

The result of the assignment provides valuable insight into the factors affecting the print belt/sheet interactions and a methodical, systematic way of correcting for them. The model will be made in MATLAB/Simulink and can then be tested and verified with a real setup. 

 

Your profile 

  • You are an MSc student in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or a related discipline 
  • You have affinity with precision mechanics, dynamics and motion systems 
  • You enjoy combining system thinking with detailed mechanical design 
  • You have experience with modelling, calculations and preferably simulation tools 
  • You are interested in mechatronic design, including actuation and control aspects
