WO: Internship Data Science - Pattern detection in printhead nozzle performance
Datum: 12 nov. 2024
Plaats: NL
Bedrijf: Canon Production Printing
Are you a WO data science student who is looking for a internship assignment? Are you ready to pioneer in pattern detection in both space and time? We are looking for you!
Your assignment
Canon Production Printing (CPP) develops and produces a variety of commercial size printers for the business to business market. Our inkjet printers are designed for high volume printing through a combination of high speed and low operational costs, while retaining high quality and flexibility.
The printhead is the droplet forming unit, the heart of our printers. Failing of the printhead directly impacts print quality. This has large consequences for our customers and is therefore undesirable. On top of that, replacement of a broken printhead is a very costly event.
The performance of the printhead is heavily determined the performance of the individual drop forming nozzles. We obtain information of their performance every few seconds, including a status (Air, blocked nozzles, electrical failure). Failure mechanisms can be recognized by patterns in space (by position of the failing nozzle) and in time (by the development of number of failing nozzles ) in this nozzle logging data.
Goal of this project is to detect failure mechanisms of the printhead by using pattern detection in the nozzle logging data. You will build further on existing methods and expand to new printer types.
Challenges for you are:
- Develop a method to detect known patterns (in time and space) automatically
- Can you find a way to detect yet unknown patterns?
- Optimize the method with additive information (for instance error codes, or usage of the printer) ?
- Deal with large amounts of data. Status of the nozzle is collected every few seconds for hundreds of nozzles in one printer.
- Deal with relatively small amounts of failures. Although data is available for thousands of printheads, no more than 20 or 30 failures (or less) may be found per failure mechanisms.
